Series S—Special Application Indexing Drives
APPLICATION A Tangen Drive provides a precise, reliable intermittent motion for use in a wide variety of power transmission applications. Standard stock Tangen Drives are available in 4, 5, 6 or 8 indexing station units, with center distances from 1 to 6 inches. Other indexes and center distances are available to order. They provide a high quality actuating device at minimum cost. Tangen Drives are used to drive indexing turrets on automatic assembly equipment as well as on other machines requiring intermittent motion such as press feed tables, packaging machines, machine tools, switch gear conveyors and piece part feeding devices. OPERATION The Tangen Drive is similar to the conventional geneva drive except that the indexing wheel is constructed in such a way that adjustments can be made in the size and path of the drive cam follower to permit compensation for wear. This exclusive feature makes it possible to adjust for wear resulting from continued operation of the unit, thus maintaining index accuracy. CONSTRUCTION The Series S Tangen Drive consists of a open-slotted wheel and a matching continuous-motion driver of ductile iron having high tensile strength. A cam follower is mounted on the driver with anti-friction needle bearings. Due to careful design and extremely close manufacturing tolerances, it is possible to provide smooth shockless indexing at high speeds relative, of course, to the inertia factors involved. Positive locking between indexes is assured. SERIES S FEATURES The Series S Tangen Drive is a limited production item. Not regularly carried in stock, it is a made-to-order special item. Its application and construction are similar to that of the Series R, except the slot in the wheel is open, making it lighter in construction and, in some cases, allowing the driver to be placed on either side of the wheel.
